According to foreign media New Atlas reports, although we often see buildings with photovoltaic panels on the roof, the facades of these buildings are usually panelless. German researchers are trying to use the facade-based solar panels to use the space. The technology was originally developed by the team of the Fraunhofer Silicon Photovoltaic Center together with researchers from the University of Applied Sciences Leipzig and the Technical University of Dresden as part of the SOLAR.shell project.
Their experimental system is designed to make aesthetics more pleasing, rather than simply placing traditional panels on the front of the building, while also receiving sunlight more efficiently and converting it into electricity. The latter is achieved through a design in which each panel is tilted towards the sun instead of facing straight out from the side of the building. As a result, the device provides up to 50% more energy than an equivalent number of conventional vertical mounting panels.
Although the panels can be fixed to existing external walls made of conventional concrete, the researchers are particularly interested in combining them with a durable new experimental material called carbon concrete composite. Unlike traditional reinforced concrete containing steel wire, it contains carbon fiber. The facade part made of this material can be cast into a panel-shaped depression. Once the panel is added, it can look smoother and fit better.
The SOLAR.shell research project itself has ended, and the subsequent SOLARcon project is now focused on system commercialization.
