An important issue for renewable energy is the unstable energy output—solar energy will encounter cloudy weather, and wind does not always blow. This shortcoming prompted researchers to begin researching battery technology to store the energy generated by renewable energy sources and return it to the grid when needed.
A Harvard research team published a paper in the journal Nature on January 10 to introduce them to the new concept battery of "A metal-free organic-inorganic aqueous flow battery".
The highlight of this research team is to break through the metal-based material structure of traditional flow batteries for more than 30 years. Currently, the most economical material for flow batteries is metal vanadium, but vanadium batteries cost as much as $80/kWh.
The Harvard team uses a large number of inexpensive organic materials that naturally exist in the earth, similar to the energy storage materials of plants and animals. This new battery not only has no power storage capacity, but also has a low cost and good economic and commercial prospects.
Team member Michael Marshak gave an example of its power storage capability. Only a tank-sized sap flow battery can be used to store solar energy for one day with the help of a roof solar panel to meet all household electricity from the afternoon to the next morning. .
They claim that this new battery storage capacity can already compete with vanadium batteries, and the cost can be reduced to 27 US dollars/kWh, which is almost one-third of vanadium batteries.
The team will continue to test the stability of this new flow battery and make more improvements for commercialization.
