Purdue University announces the launch of the nation ’s first purely digital nuclear reactor for research

Prior to the transition to digital form, all nuclear reactors throughout the United States were using traditional analog technology. However, at a press conference on Tuesday, Purdue University announced that the school will use the first purely digital nuclear reactor in the United States. This research brings together partners from both public and private research fields. Scientists and engineers will work to solve the reliability and resilience problems of the "PUR-1" reactor.

Project director Clive Townsend said in a statement: "As the world turns to digital nuclear reactor technology, it also introduces the need to explore and understand its advantages and vulnerabilities, because our economy also depends on the resilience of these systems."

It is reported that before the construction of PUR-1, all nuclear reactors in the United States were using traditional simulation technology, such as vacuum tubes and manual welding lines. The Purdue University plant will become the first network nuclear reactor test platform for researchers and corporate partners in the United States.

PUR-1 is authorized by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission to ensure the safe use of radioactive materials. Its partners include a nuclear measurement and inspection company called Mirion Technologies to closely observe the performance of the reactor in different environments.

Townsend said: "The cooperation between the public and students and the private and public sectors has renewed interest in this area. This small reactor will be used for various purposes and inject new vitality into people's new life and new research.
