ROHM Mass Production Supports USB PD and Type-C Control ICs

Rom announced on September 16, 2015 that it has developed a control IC "BM92TxxMWV Series" that supports USB connector standard "Type-C" and power supply standard "USB Power Delivery (PD)". There are four main products, sample shipments are now available, sample price is 2,000 yen (excluding tax). It is scheduled to begin volume production in December 2015. In terms of production base, the former process is under the responsibility of ROHM Hamamatsu, and the latter is handled by ROHM Electronics Philippines, Philippines.

According to Rom, the new product is characterized by the application of a 0.13Î¼m â€œBiCDMOS processâ€, high-voltage technology and circuit technology to enhance the functionality. As a result, other power supplies, FETs, and the like used for power supply control can be reduced.

The original standard version 1.0 of USB Type-C was established in April 2014. Rom's control IC meets the 1.1 standard. Type-C also supports "USB 3.1" with a maximum data transfer rate of 10Gbps. In an operating mode called "Alternate Mode", in addition to MHL and DisplayPort, Thunderbolt signals that support DisplayPort and PCI Express can also be transmitted.

The Type-C connector also supports USB PD. With the USB PD, up to 100W of power (bus power) can be supplied while data is being transmitted and received via the USB. The bus power is much higher than USB 3.0/3.1 4.5W and 7.5W of "USB BC (Battery Charging)" which does not transmit data only. ROHM's control IC complies with the USB PD 2.0 standard.
