China became Germany's most important trading partner for the first time

On the morning of 24th, Beijing time, Reuters said that the German government data shows that in 2016 China became the most important trading partner of Germany for the first time, and the United States fell to third place, behind France.
According to data from the German Federal Statistical Office, Reuters showed that the total trade between Germany and China increased to 170 billion euros (about 180 billion US dollars) in 2016.
This development may be welcomed by the German government. After President Trump threatened to impose high tariffs on imported products and accused Germany of manipulating the euro exchange rate, the German government is aiming to maintain global free trade.
German Deputy Prime Minister Sigmar Gabriel even hinted that if the Trump administration adopts protectionism, the EU should refocus its economic policies on Asia.
The German BGA Trade Association responded by saying: "In view of the protectionist plan of the new US president, it is foreseeable that the trade links between Germany and China will be further strengthened."
France is still Germany's second largest trading partner. In 2016, France and Germany traded a total of 167 billion euros, the United States ranked third, and trade with Germany totaled 165 billion euros.
In 2015, the United States became Germany's most important trading partner, surpassing France for the first time since 1961.
