In the first quarter of 2011, orders from the German machine tool industry showed a three-digit growth rate. Compared to the same period in 2010, orders for German machine tools increased by 130% in January-March. The domestic demand and export development momentum is almost the same: domestic demand orders rose by 127%, while overseas orders rose by 132%.
“The machine tool department is now taking a faster and more aggressive production pace than last fall,†said VDM executive director Dr. Wilfried Schfer. “This is reflected in our first quarter sales, which is growing at a 45% rate. The order volume is close to the 2007 full year high.
It also performed well in terms of capacity utilization. It reached 93.8% in April this year, almost close to the peak level in 2008. The backlog of orders in February this year has reached 8.7 months, which is also quite close to the high peak in 2008. The machine tool department currently employs 64,100 people, almost the sum of 2010.
