Researchers find out why rice absorbs arsenic

According to a new study published by the National Academy of Sciences in the United States, the reason why rice absorbs arsenic from soil has been found by researchers. This discovery will help to remove arsenic, a potentially harmful element, from the staple foods of Asians. Researchers from the Institute of Biology at the University of Okayama in Japan stated in the paper that they have found two proteins in rice that can carry arsenic from the soil to the grain. The researchers found that the amount of arsenic in rice straw and grain was reduced in rice with both proteins removed. However, the researchers also found that if these two proteins are removed, rice's ability to absorb silicon from the soil will also be reduced. Silicon is essential for the growth and yield of rice. It also helps rice to prevent pests and diseases. Researchers hope that one day the rice will be able to absorb only silicon without absorbing arsenic through genetic modification.
