Usually the energy collected by solar cells needs to be stored in conventional batteries before being output through these conventional batteries. However, recently the Indian scientific research team successfully eliminated the intermediate storage process. The battery they created replaced the traditional anode with a titanium nitride-based photoanode, allowing the battery to self-charge through solar or artificial light sources.
The team is led by Professor Musthafa Ottakam Thotiyl from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Polytechnic. Using natural indoor lighting, it can be charged in 30 seconds. It can then emit enough LED light photos or a small fan's power output for up to 100 charge/discharge cycles. In addition, titanium nitride photoanodes are more stable than conventional anodes, preventing them from overheating and causing fire.
